About Your Instructor
I'm Pete DeMarco, former English teacher turned full time photographer. The start of my photographic journey 10 years ago was an epic fail! So I spent more money to upgrade my camera and lenses. It didn't make a difference.
Only until I realized that better gear would not make me a better photographer, the same way a nicer stove won't make my meals any more delicious, did I begin to improve.
My photos then appeared in magazines, in articles for CNN and Digital Photography School, on ads for Fortune 500 companies, and even in National Geographic for winning their photo contest.
It was great, but nothing like the satisfaction I get when I express my creative vision through images, especially when it resonates with others.

There's a saying that the best camera is the one you have with you. You'll get the most out of the course if you have a camera that you can control the settings with.
These include but are not limited to point-and-shoot cameras like the Sony Cybershot or Canon Powershot, micro four thirds, DSLRs, and mirrorless cameras.
I mainly teach the course with a Nikon D610 although there are some scenes where I use a mirrorless Sony A7ii.
The next most important piece of gear after your camera is a tripod. You will still find the course helpful even if you don't own a tripod. However, having one will greatly increase the quality of your photos and opportunities to shoot in low-light situations.
This course is not about mobile phone photography. On the other hand, many of the concepts taught, like composition for instance, can be applied when photographing with your cell phone.
